Class Updates

Spring 1 update

We are so proud of all of Tortoiseshells and their determination to succeed this half term. They have all come back determined to show off their learning powers to all of the adults that they come across. We have also welcomed a new addition to our class this half-term- welcome Leo! We have loved having you join us.

English

In English this half term the children started by reading all about incredible jobs (that you’ve probably never heard of!) The children then began writing their own non-chronological reports about a topic that interests them. They taught us about everything from motorways to animals. In the last few weeks we have dived into the world of Ernest Shackleton and the Endurance. The children have created descriptive recounts or newspaper articles all about this epic journey! The children have learnt about fronted adverbials, similes, metaphors and using exciting vocabulary to impress their readers. Other children in the hub used this journey to write their own epic adventures about their journey to school.

Maths

This half term some of the children have covered ‘thinking 10’ to tackle mental addition and subtraction. We have been learning all about how we can apply our number bond to 10 learning to be able to solve problems (even with 3 digit numbers!) mentally.

Other children have tackled multiplication and division and learning different methods to solve more difficult questions and how these strategies can simplify our questions and make them easier to understand and solve.

Some others have been learning all about estimating on number lines- learning about benchmarks, estimating where a number lands on a number line and then even using number lines to solve addition questions.

Hub group history

This half term we have dived into the 1960s, we have thought about how the toys are different and how the internet has impacted the toys that are made. The children have worked on using their oracy skills to compare the 1960s to now. We have also thought about key events in the 1960s and how those have impacted us now.

Year 5 and 6 history

This half term the children have learnt about the Shang Dynasty. They have been thinking about how people lived in the Shang Dynasty, they have become archaeologists and explored artefacts found from the Shang Dynasty and what it might mean about how people lived at the time.

Hub group science

We have been learning all about plants! We have learnt about what they need to live, the different parts of a plant and even planted and grew our own seeds! Next half term we will continue thinking about plants and the what the jobs are of the parts of the plants.

Hub group computing

This half term we have been learning all about programming and we have programmed our own BeeBots. We learnt that computers are very literal so we have to practice giving clear instruction to our friends and the robots.

Hub group art

The children have loved creating their art exhibition pictures this half term. They have created amazing pieces using water colours and hiding some of their pages to create the peace symbol.

Autumn 2 photos

Autumn 2

Wow - what a busy half term! We are so proud of Tortoiseshells and how they have managed all the changes this half term has brought. We are really lucky in the Hub to have such wonderfully kind and resilient children.

English

This half term we started by looking at Stella and the Seagull and persuasive writing. The children all produced some brilliant persuasive writing about things they wanted to change about the local area. We have then been looking at the Novel the Lion Inside where children have produced some amazing retellings of the story - using adjectives and fronted adverbials.

Maths

This half term has been all about times tables! The children in groups 1 and 2 have worked hard to learn times tables facts, building arrays, solving worded problems and learning about multiples and factors. In group 3 the children have been continuing looking at comparing numbers, using < and > and thinking about 1 more or 1 less. They have shown us how amazing they are at using their mathematical vocabulary when asnwering their questions.

Geography

This half term the children in the Hub have been learning all about Earthquakes, how they affect people and how they happen. We got to own a country and learn how they cope with earthquakes and how it is more difficult for some countries compared to others.

Science

The children have been learning all about rocks- they've thought like scientists when experimenting with different rocks, they have thought about how rocks and fossils form. They have explored different types of rocks and what we use different rocks for.

RE

In RE we have been learning all about the Christmas story. We have thought about what different parts of it might be important to Christians and why. We have learnt all about what different symbols represent and how some are religious and some are secular.

Art

This half term has been all about maps! We have used different types of mediums to create different maps. From drawing, to modelling to printing we have experimented with different types of creations and evaluated which ones we prefer and why.

Autumn 1

Autumn 1 Update

Tortoiseshells have had such an amazing start to the year. They have come back with such determination to succeed in their learning, on the playground and on really exciting trips. We have been filled with so much pride with what they have achieved so far and can't wait to see the success that they will continue to build.

English

We started this year off looking at the graphic novel 'Arthur and the Golden Rope' we wrote our own narratives with amazing adjectives and following the structure of Arthur and the Golden Rope. We then moved on to poetry, which fitted in beautifully with national poetry day. The children loved sharing their favourite poems with their friends and writing their own as well. They challenged themselves with their vocabulary (finding words that rhyme and make sense!), as well as exploring the syllables in words and how a poem can sound.

Maths

The children have tackled place value this halft term- everything from partioning two digit numbers, ordering decimals, rounding, adding and subtracting 10 and 100. They have impressed us with their resilience and self-belief when learning new things. Check out tapestry for more of their brilliant work!

Hub History

The Stone Age

This half term the children have been learning about The Stone Age. We explored, where they lived, how we learnt about them from archeaologists and became archelogists ourselves to work out how the Stone Age people lived.

The Ancient Maya

This half term they have learnt all about The Ancient Maya, they learnt about where they lived, how they lived, what food they ate and what jobs they have. The children then had to become archelogists and look at artefacts and decide what that meant about how the Ancient Maya lived.

Hub Science

This half term the children have been learning all about light. They have conducted experiments with shadows, tested how transparatent or opaque objects are and discovered how shadows work.

Hub PSHE

We have been thinking all about rights and responsibilities! We have thought about how we have rights but we have to make sure we are not stopping other children having their rights. Like the right to be safe, the right to learn and the right to be heard. The children have thought hard about how we can make our class room a place where everyone can have what they need.

Hub RE

Humanism

The children have been learning all about Humanism this half term. They have been thinking about what motivates people to make the right choices. They have learnt how humanists rely on science to make decisions and thought about what we can do to live a good life and how that means different things to different people.

Sikhism

This half term the children have learnt all about Sikhism. We have thought about how Sikh's show commitment and how we show commitment in our own lives. We thought about community and hosted a Langar for the other children in the Hub.

What a brilliant half term we have had in Tortoiseshells and can't wait for Autumn 2.
