Class updates




Summer 1
This half term has been wonderfully busy, filled with SATs, exciting trips and our fantastic class assembly. In English, the children have been exploring poetry, writing thoughtful pieces about how they see the world and experimenting with similes and metaphors. They then moved on to non‑chronological reports, researching the rainforest and transforming their findings into impressive pieces of writing.
In maths, each group has tackled a range of topics:

Group 1- fractions! We have been ordering, thinking about equivalent fractions and adding and subtracting them! We have worked hard on understanding our multiples and using our times tables to help us.

Group 2- Statistics we learnt how to create different types of chart including bar, tally and pictograms as well as working on answering questions about the data and then we moved on to shape where we have been learning about angles, parallel and perpendicular lines and what shapes we find them in.

Group 3 – firstly tackled heavier and lighter. They weighed objects and thought about whichh one weighed more and even thought about converting from grams to kilograms, then we moved on to using greater than and less than in symbols and finally an introduction to statistics. The children have thought about how we can sort information.
We are incredibly proud of how many children have shown resilience and confidence when accessing their mainstream afternoon lessons—do have a look at those class pages to see more of their achievements.
In the Hub, we have been learning about the role of animals in World War 1, including the surprising ways elephants helped with heavy work such as ploughing fields, how children's lives were affected by the war and how the army were able to send secret messages.
In RE, we have been exploring Islam and reflecting on what belonging means to us. We thought about different places that we belong, like at school or with our family! Then we thought about what sort of things we might find in a mosque and what their purpose was – including a place to wash before you pray! Finally, we thought about the importance of prayer to Muslims and where, when and how they might pray.
In science, we have been thinking all about humans and living things. We started off by thinking about life cycles and even watched the life cycle of our very own caterpillars as they turned into butterflies. We then thought about how we keep our bodies working with exercise and eating healthily. We learnt all about what our body needs and how we keep it functioning.
In PSHE, we learnt all about relationships. We have been thinking about our friendships – what makes a good friend? Which adults can we trust to look after us? And if we have a conflict with a friend, how can we resolve it? The children have been thinking all about how they can be good friends and help others as well.
PE has been a real highlight this half term, with a cricket coach joining us to deliver energetic and engaging sessions that the children have absolutely loved. In art, we have stepped into the world of sculpture, creating imaginative 3D pieces using only paper.
Spring 2
English
This half term, the children created their own narratives inspired by the short film The Lighthouse. They learned how to use descriptive language, build suspense and leave their audience on exciting cliff‑hangers. The children showed real imagination and developed their storytelling skills beautifully.
Maths
Each group made strong progress in their targeted areas:

Group 1 learned how to use formal written methods for multiplication and division.

Group 2 focused on formal written addition and subtraction, including exchanges.

Group 3 explored making 100, used “think 10” strategies in mental maths to tackle tricky questions and practised regrouping numbers.
Computing
In Computing, the children learned all about data handling. They created pictograms and tally charts and used the information they collected to answer mathematical questions. They enjoyed seeing how data can be represented and interpreted in different ways.
RE
In RE, we explored the Easter story, thinking carefully about why Good Friday is such an important part of the Christian celebration. The children asked thoughtful questions and showed great empathy when discussing the events of the story.
Geography
Our Geography topic this term was Where Does Our Food Come From?

One group studied how food products begin their journey on the farm and how they reach our plates.

Another group explored Fairtrade, learning what it means, how it supports farmers in other countries and why it matters to us as consumers.
The children were fascinated by the global journey of everyday foods.
PSHE
In PSHE, we learned all about leading healthy lives. The children explored the importance of eating well, staying active and looking after their mental health. They reflected on small, positive choices they can make each day to support their wellbeing.
Spring 1
English
This half-term, we studied Incredible Jobs You’ve Probably Never Heard Of!

Groups 1 and 2 produced their own non‑chronological reports on topics of their choice. They learned to use commas in lists, apply subordinating conjunctions and explain information clearly for their reader.

Group 3 explored a range of different jobs, wrote about what those jobs involved and reflected on what they might like to do in the future.
Later in the term, the children moved on to personal narratives, learning how real‑life events can shape a story and writing their own narratives inspired by people’s lives.
Maths
-
Group 1 focused on mental addition and subtraction, learning strategies to simplify problems and solve them efficiently without written methods.

Group 2 explored multiplication, using a range of strategies to break down more complex problems and strengthen their reasoning skills.

Group 3 worked on shape and ordering numbers on a number line, building confidence with key mathematical ideas.
History

In the Hub, the children learned about the 1960s, comparing toys from the past with the toys they use today. They also explored how historians divide time into decades and why this is helpful.

Year 4 studied the Anglo‑Saxons, discovering who they were and how we know what mattered to them.
-
Years 5 and 6 worked together in the Hub to learn about the Shang Dynasty, exploring its hierarchy and comparing it to systems they recognised. This joint approach helped them build confidence before joining mainstream lessons.
Science

In the Hub, the children learned all about plants, exploring the different parts of a plant and what plants need to grow.

Year 3 mainstream: Forces and magnets

Year 4 mainstream: Sound—how it is made and how we hear it

Year 5: Space—solar system, moon phases and model‑making

Year 6: Light—how it travels, how we see and how shadows are formed
RE
-
Years 3 and 4 explored the question: Did praying at regular intervals help a Muslim in their everyday life? They reflected on commitment and the different ways people show dedication.

Years 5 and 6 worked together in the Hub to explore the Christian question: Is anything eternal? They shared their own ideas while learning about Christian beliefs and perspectives.
Autumn 2
This term has been full of creativity, curiosity and new learning across the Hub. The children have embraced every challenge with enthusiasm and have produced some truly impressive work across the curriculum.
English
We began the term by exploring The Little Dragon, using the text as inspiration for our own poetry. The children experimented with language, rhythm and imagery before celebrating World Poetry Day, where they performed their poems using their oracy skills. Their confidence and expression were a real highlight of the term.
Following this, we moved on to writing fables, using The Lion Inside as our model text. The children learned about the features of fables, including moral messages, character development and story structure, before planning and writing their own imaginative versions.
Maths
Each group made strong progress in their targeted areas this term.

Group 1 began learning how to regroup two‑digit numbers into tens and ones, building a solid foundation for future written methods.

Group 2 explored factors and multiples, developing their understanding of number relationships and patterns.

Group 3 focused on counting forwards and backwards with increasing accuracy and confidence.
Geography
Our Geography topic this term was earthquakes. The children learned where earthquakes happen, why they occur and what impact they have on the people and communities affected. They explored real‑world examples and developed a strong understanding of natural disasters and their consequences.
PSHE
In PSHE, we celebrated our differences and explored what makes each of us unique. The children reflected on diversity within our school community and discussed how to show tolerance, kindness and respect towards others. These conversations helped build empathy and strengthen relationships across the Hub.
RE
In Religious Education, we explored the meaning of the Nativity for Christians. The children learned about the significance of the Christmas story and how it shapes Christian beliefs. We also visited Christchurch, where the children had the opportunity to deepen their understanding and ask thoughtful questions about Christian traditions and celebrations.
Computing
In Computing, the children learned what makes a good photographer. They explored composition, lighting and perspective before practising their skills by taking their own photographs. The results were fantastic and showed real creativity and attention to detail.
Autumn 1 term class updates
English
Our first text of the term was Arthur and the Golden Rope.

Group 1 focused on writing in the past tense, using expanded noun phrases and sequencing events.

Group 2 developed their use of fronted adverbials, cohesion within paragraphs and expanded noun phrases with prepositions.

Group 3 worked on constructing sentences using colourful semantics, sequencing narratives and applying phonics to support spelling.
Later in the term, we explored poetry.

Group 1 used their senses, alliteration and simple sentences.
-
Group 2 experimented with personification, metaphors, onomatopoeia and mood‑setting vocabulary.
-
Group 3 focused on rhyme and building simple poetic sentences.
All groups produced their own poems, showcasing creativity and growing confidence.
Maths
We began with place value:

Group 1 compared and ordered numbers beyond 1,000, represented numbers in different ways and explored 1,000 more/less.
-
Group 2 counted in powers of 10 and practised rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000.
-
Group 3 identified tens and ones, used manipulatives to represent numbers and compared values using <, > and =.
Our second topic was addition and subtraction.
Group 1 began using formal written methods and regrouping.
Group 2 continued working with two-digit numbers and using mental methods to support their numeracy skills.
Group 3 began using concrete resources to add beyond 10 using the 'think 10' method.
History
History learning was tailored to each year group:

Hub groups explored the Stone Age, learning about early human life, artefacts and how life changed over time.

Year 4 studied the Romans, investigating how Roman arrival transformed life in Britain.

Year 5 explored the Maya civilisation, focusing on why the Maya changed the way they lived.
-
Year 6 learned about World War II, particularly the significance of winning the Battle of Britain.
PE and Swimming
Physical Education has been a big part of our weekly timetable. All children took part in our Hub PE session every Thursday morning, while Year 6 also attended swimming lessons on Thursday afternoons and had an additional PE session on Mondays. Year 3 and 4 enjoyed their own extra PE lesson each Monday as well. The children have shown great enthusiasm and growing confidence in all physical activities.
