Rail Safety

The children at Margaret Wix had a special assembly this morning with Val Male, who is our Chair of Governors and also Hertfordshire Principal Railway Officer. Val discussed the benefits of rail travel with the children as well as the importance of keeping safe on the railway. We learned where it is safe to stand and how to behave on the platform as well as the importance of taking care when getting onto trains. An astonishing fact we learned is that a train weighs 400 tonnes! This is important because it means that a train travelling at up to 125mph takes 20 football pitches to stop - this showed us the importance of keeping away from train tracks as it would be impossible for a driver to notice us and stop in time.
